Early this evening I participated in a live recording of the BBC World Services radio program, The Forum. They normally record in London but came up to Edinburgh to record live from the TEDGlobal conference. The Forum is hosted by BBC diplomatic correspondent Bridget Kendall and each week she interviews leading thinkers about topical issues and ideas.
This particular show began with a discussion about the compassionate corporation and how to achieve this paradigmn shift across radically different companies with widely diverse agendas. Comments on the topic were solicited from the audienced and I was the first person they called to come to the microphone. I shared the philosophy that we've been implementing at Eccolo -- the concept of the Healthy Agency, in which the empowerment and benefit of the employees becomes a core focus of the business. It airs this Saturday--you can go to The Forum page on the BBC World Services Web site and click on How & When to Listen to find out when it airs, download a recording or listen live from the Web site.
My favorite quote from the TED speakers today is from the session with Tim Harford, who writes the Undercover Economist column for the Financial Times. He argues that "the world has become far too unpredictable and complex for today's challenges to be tackled with ready-made solutions and expert opinons." Instead he suggests "we learn to embrace failure and to constantly adapt, to improvise rather than plan" (from Tim's program bio.)
Here's Tim's quote, which I absolutely loved. Actually almost everyone in the audience loved it; they were all scribbling madly the same time I was: "Making mistakes is a good direction. And it is very difficult to make good mistakes."
Amen to that. More tomorrow from Edinburgh, where the sun has a last begun to shine.
